Prerequisites: The Molecular Basis of Chemical Change (CHY 122),Physics for Engineers and Physical Scientists (PHY 112/PHY 122), Calculus III (MAT 228) or equivalent.

Mathematical Preliminaries, Ideal Gas Law, Van Der Waals equation of state.
First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics: Heat Capacities, Entropy, Gibbs and Helmholtz Free energies, Maxwells Relations.Third Law of Thermodynamics, Standard states, Magnetic systems.
Open systems, Chemical potential, Reaction equilibria, Enthalpy and Entropy effects on reactions, Phase equilibria, Partial molar properties.
Ideal solutions, Raoult's and Henry's laws, Non-ideal mixtures, Activity and Osmotic coefficients, Colligative properties.
Electrochemical potential, Electrolytes, Electrochemical cells. Membrane potentials ,Biochemical Thermodynamics.
Thermodynamics of surfaces.
